It’s VMA week: Madonna’s performing at the show for the first time in over two decades and Taylor Swift is in range of a record.
Every Monday, we run hundreds of topics across thousands of active Kalshi Entertainment markets to ask one thing: where is the volume right now? This tells us what people are excited about, talking about and, most importantly, where they are putting their money. That helps us identify where attention is being concentrated so you can spot the story before it’s everywhere.
Two numbers do the heavy lifting here: timeliness (how close a market is to resolving) and volume (how much trading activity it’s pulling). Cross them and we can put these markets into three buckets:
· Hot and Loud - loads of volume and close to a resolution date
· Big and Banking - the crowd is already here, the resolution date is not
· On the Radar – the clock is loud but the money hasn’t shown up yet

Hot and Loud
It’s VMAs. The contracts aren’t showing up in the above chart, because Kalshi’s default max resolution date sits year out. The volume isn’t waiting though. Kalshi alone has taken nearly 85,000 contracts in the last 24 hours surrounding the MTV awards, and it doesn’t seem like the trading is going to slow down leading up to the ceremony. I mean, we get Madonna’s first VMA performance in 23 years, and Taylor Swift can finally break the tie with Beyonce for most VMA wins of all time, so the excitement is justified. For Taylor specifically, the market currently prices her around 57% to take home Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia.
If the market’s indication is correct, she’ll be breaking the tie with the Bey Hive on Sunday and become the sole leader in VMA wins. Is Madonna’s surprise performance enough to sway the fan vote or is this one already decided?
The biggest-volume VMA market, though, is Song of the Year, which, unsurprisingly, seems to be headed toward a BTS beatdown.
Swim debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held that spot for 20 consecutive weeks; that kind of sustained chart dominance is directly reflected in their current price as the heavy favorite. Can anyone take down the K-pop stars?
And of course, it wouldn’t be a Culture Radar without mentioning Big Brother, perpetually the largest story in the category. With elimination day rapidly approaching this Thursday, the market seems keyed on who’s going home next. Melody Morris is sitting at a brutal 93% chance to be eliminated. An absolute collapse from just a week ago, when she sent Yash Patel home during the double eviction. The market doesn’t believe there is anyone left in the house to save her.

Big, durable headlines that don’t have a close resolve date, but the audience and the volume are already there.
As always, we need to keep tabs on the Oscars Best Picture market to see how our friends in film are doing.
Wow. The Black Ball has nearly doubled in 24 hours, and the bump doesn't seem like it's just empty heat. Rather, a direct result from the Spanish/French-directed film winning the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sunday. Since 2008, 16 of the 18 TIFF People's Choice winners have gone on to receive a Best Picture nomination, and 5 of those 18 won the Best Picture Oscar outright. The question now is whether it can keep climbing to catch The Odyssey.
Same category, different market is the ever-volatile Best Actor race at the Oscars, which has just seen yet another change at the top.
It’s the year of “he’s due” as the three actors leading in this market (Malkovich, Damon, Cruise) are all hoping to receive their first win for Best Actor. For the new favorite, Malkovich, who claimed his lead just a few days ago, can chalk up this movement to the performance of Wild Horse Nine at Venice. Which actually netted the veteran actor an award already: the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Which of these overdue stars finally gets their due?
End of year Spotify markets, including Top Song are gaining some early volume as we head into fall. End of Beginning has owned the market since early August, running away with a once tight race. The song sits at an imposing 77% to bring home the honors.
On the Radar
Some thin, quick hitters with mostly low volume that may be worth keeping an eye on over the next couple days (or weeks depending on the resolve date).
End of year Google searches round out the Radar this week, with the most searched person and most searched movie both gaining some traction volume wise. Haaland, Bad Bunny and Obsession are among the most traded options here, but the timeline is far enough away to keep it out of Big and Banking. Worth checking back in with these as we get closer to year-end.
By Sunday night, we'll know if Taylor Swift stands alone atop VMA history or whether Madonna's first performance in 23 years was enough to move the room. The Black Ball, however, is a longer tape.
