Market Movers: The MVP Race, the Super Bowl Board, and Everything Week 1 Repriced

The board didn’t wait for Week 2 to shake up the markets. Melbourne diced up a Super Bowl price and the DPOY favorite, and a 96-point game on Sunday did the opposite for an MVP hopeful. Here’s what moved, what it means, and where the market might be getting ahead of itself.

A quick note on the numbers: all line moves below are Kalshi prices unless stated otherwise, since it's the deeper book across most of these markets. Where Polymarket tells a different story, I've called it out. All prices recorded are at the time of writing and are subject to change.

Rams-49ers Implosion Hits Two Markets

The Aussie opener on Thursday set the tone for the whole board as San Fran throttled the Rams 27-7, affecting two markets at once. The first was the 3¢ movement for both teams in their respective Super Bowl odds: The Niners climbed to 8¢ while the Rams, who still hold the spot as favorites, slid to 13¢ from their preseason 16¢.

The bigger story here, from a line movement standpoint, is the Defensive Player of the Year market and the Myles Garrett injury. The reigning DPOY, who the Rams sent Jared Verse and three future picks for, landed on injured reserve following his tackle-less game. He’ll be out a minimum of four weeks, and the market has responded accordingly: Garrett’s price to win the award has cratered from 26¢ to 2¢. Getting steamrolled by a division rival and losing your best player on the same day is about as bad as a Week 1 can get.

MVP: Williams Arrives, Allen Answers the Bell

Two quarterbacks from separate conferences rose to the occasion, on the field and on the board, with stellar week 1 performances.

Caleb Williams (7¢ → 12¢ , +5) led the Bears to the highest scoring Week 1 game in NFL history, pouring 59 onto the heads of the Panthers. He accounted for 334 total yards and 4 total touchdowns as the former #1 pick is looking like the prospect Ben Johnson was hired to unlock. Worth noting: Polymarket is even more sold on him than Kalshi, pricing him at 17¢, a gap we'll revisit later.

Josh Allen (12¢ → 15¢, +3) did, well, what Josh Allen does. This time he did it against the market’s presumptive best defense in the league. Buffalo was facing their third straight loss to the Texans and Allen was able to flip the script with 357 total yards and 4 touchdowns, capping off a close win to begin the season 1-0.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, four signal-callers dropped 2-4 cents each: Herbert, Maye, Stafford and Burrow. This market is volatile week-to-week, a good reminder that when there are big risers like the two above, there must be fallers to fund the dramatic shifts.

DPOY: Hutchinson and Watt Fill The Void

With Garrett sidelined, the market reacted fast to reprice the field.

Aidan Hutchinson (12¢ → 21¢ , +9) the biggest mover in the market, posted 2 sacks in a Lions win that nearly got away from them. He and Will Anderson are bobbing as the favorites in the market. On Kalshi, Will Anderson still holds his preseason crown but the lead has narrowed to a single cent (22¢ to Hutch’s 21¢). For Polymarket, Hutchinson is out front as the 20¢ favorite, only 2¢ ahead of Anderson. The two books also disagree on Anderson himself,  22¢ on Kalshi versus 18¢ on Polymarket. It's a real gap, though the DPOY market is thin enough on Polymarket that you couldn't get much size down to act on it. Is Hutch back to being the game wrecker he was pre-injury, or are better days ahead for Will Anderson, who doesn’t have to get the Josh Allen treatment again in the regular season?

T.J. Watt (4¢ → 11¢ , +7) had perhaps the loudest defensive performance on the slate, getting to the Quarterback twice and taking him to the house for a pick-6 in the Steelers home opener.

Honorable mention here for Fred Warner, who jumped up 4¢ while riding shotgun in the Rams beatdown in Melbourne.

OPOY: A Quiet Afternoon Costs Chase Six Cents

Ja’Marr Chase (12¢ → 6¢, -6) had his price cut in half after posting his lowest yardage total since 2023, just two catches for 12 yards in Cincy’s 33-27 win over Tampa Bay. It’s the headline OPOY mover of the week. Market overreaction, or will this become the new norm for one of the NFL’s best receivers?

Rookie of the Year: RB’s Lead the Way

Jadarian Price (17¢ → 24¢ ,n+7) looked every bit of the player the Seahawks spent a first round pick on, going for over 5 a pop on limited touches. If his role grows as the season goes on, this could be a price to monitor. Other than De’Zhaun Stribling, who dropped 10¢ due to injury, Price is the biggest mover in the market.

Jeremiyah Love (17¢  → 20¢, +3) is keeping pace with Price as he looks to usurp the RB1 job from Allgeier in Arizona.

Price Discrepancies

Kalshi and Polymarket seem to be at odds (pun intended) on a handful of markets after Week 1. One caveat here though: I'm only flagging markets where both books are liquid enough for the price to actually mean something. A lot of Polymarket's award longshots trade on a few hundred dollars, where a single small bet can leave a stale, misleading number sitting on the screen. Those aren't disagreements, they're noise, so they're not here. Compared apples-to-apples, these are the real gaps to be mindful of if you plan on trading these markets.

  • 49ers to win it all (8¢ on Kalshi, 4¢ on Polymarket). The Super Bowl team markets are the deepest books on either platform, so this doesn’t look like a liquidity mirage. A genuine 2x disagreement on a fresh contender coming off a statement, divisional win.

  • Caleb Williams MVP (17¢ on Polymarket, 12¢ on Kalshi). Polymarket's crowd is buying the breakout harder than Kalshi's. Hard to argue with what we saw on Sunday, the prospect Caleb was coming out of college, and what we know of Ben Johnson.

  • Dak Prescott MVP (7¢ on Polymarket, 4¢ on Kalshi. Another spot where Polymarket sits roughly double.

  • Lamar Jackson & Josh Allen MVP (14¢ on Polymarket, 11¢ on Kalshi)

  • DPOY, trade with caution: Will Anderson 22¢ (Kalshi) vs 18¢ (Polymarket), and Myles Garrett still 6¢ on Polymarket vs 2¢ on Kalshi. Polymarket has been slower to price in the Garrett injury. Just note these DPOY books are thin, so treat them as signals, not free money.

What We Learned and What To Look For Next Week.

Award markets are much more reactive than the Super Bowl market at this point in this season. MVP and OPOY especially draw a fantasy-heavy, offense-minded crowd. The type of crowd that might react hard to a single big box score, which can swing these markets more than the results might justify. However, this does open the door to possible edges that can be discovered by looking ahead at schedules, injury news and coach-speak to be proactive instead of reactive when trading these markets.

Here’s what I’m looking for next week and beyond:

  •  Rams next four while Garrett is out: Giants, Broncos, Eagles, Bills. Can the Rams keep up with their .13¢ favorite pricing during this stretch or will they feel the void left by the reigning DPOY?

  •  Ja’Marr Chasing OPOY - He gets Houston next, who just got cooked by Buffalo but is still considered a top defense. If he stays quiet again, the .6¢ pricing reaction stops looking like a Week 1 tantrum.

  • DPOY- Hutchinson vs Anderson. Watt will need some more splash plays to truly enter the race, while Anderson’s price survived a Josh Allen thrashing. Ironically, that's exactly who Hutchinson gets after a short rest on Thursday Night.
